Mahindra has revealed the new-gen Thar 2020 in the country after a long wait. It’s bigger and comes with more features than before. The 2020 Thar is based on a new platform and will be offered with both petrol and diesel engine options. You’ll also be happy to know that there’s an automatic transmission on offer for the first time apart from a standard 6-speed manual. The 2020 Thar will be launched on October 2 and we expect prices to start from Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).
Specifications
The Thar will come with two engine options: a 130PS/300Nm 2.2-litre diesel engine and a 150PS/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. Both engines will be offered with a choice of 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission, and will be offered with a 4x4 drivetrain with a low range transfer case as standard. The off-road oriented AX variant gets a mechanical locking differential while the LX variant also gets brake locking differential for better off-road capability. The new Thar boasts a water wading ability of 650mm, an approach angle of 41.8degree, departure angle of 36.8degree and rampover angle of 27degree. It’s underpinned by a new ladder frame chassis and sits on independent double wishbone suspension at the front and multi link coil springs at the rear.
Variants
The 2020 Thar will come in two variants: AX and LX. The Thar AX series is aimed at the adventurer seekers while the LX takes a more premium approach. The latter is also offered with a factory fitted hardtop while a soft top is also on offer with both variants.
Features
Notable features in the Thar include a touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, climate control, a coloured multi-info display, cruise control, steering-mounted audio controls, front power windows, and remote locking. Safety features include dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability program,LED light system, hill hold assist and even a roll cage.

It goes without saying that an SUV wearing the Thar badge has got to be very capable off the road. While we didn't get an opportunity to check it over any kind of challenging terrain, supported the knowledge shared by Mahindra, the Thar should quite easily be able to tackle the rough stuff.Mahindra Thar 4x4 setup can provide 50/50 power split. Shift on the fly allows you to switch from 2H or two-wheel-drive mode to 4H or four-wheel-drive mode on the go. Plus, you get 4-low mode which will multiply torque by 2.48 times and a mechanical locking differential. Mahindra Thar Equipped With18in wheels, 2020 Mahindra Thar ground clearance stands at 226mm (unladen). Mahindra Thar Other highlights include a 42-degree approach angle, 37-degree departure angle and a 27-degree ramp over angle, again when shod with 18in tyres. The Thar can wade through 650mm deep water. As before, the construction is body-on-frame type.
