During EICMA 2018, Piaggio confirmed that it would be updating its GTS 300 line-up and the new scooters have officially launched in international markets. The most significant change is the addition of what Vespa call its HPE (High Performance Engine). The updated GTS 300 portfolio consists of five scooters – the GTS, GTS Touring, GTS Super, GTS SuperSport, and the GTS SuperTech – all of which are equipped with the new motor.
If you are a scooter lover and want the bragging rights of having one of the best in the business this is it. The Vespa GTS 300 is the most powerful offering from the portfolio of the Italian two-wheeler manufacturer. Even though the powerful scooter is mechanically different from its siblings, it still retains the fundamental Italian styling.
The Vespa GTS 300 uses a part-analogue-part-digital instrument console with an LCD display that houses the fuel gauge, odometer, trip-meter and clock. Powering the scooter is a 278cc, single-cylinder motor churning out 22bhp of peak power and 22.3Nm of torque. Since it’s the most powerful scooter from the stables of Vespa, the GTS 300 features traction control and a two-channel ABS system.
The bike includes an all-steel body which Vespa claims helps in the dealing with elements and fast strength of the bike. Braking is dealt with by 220mm distance across plate brakes at front and back which is important, given the guaranteed top speed of 130kmph. The bike additionally has a guaranteed eco-friendliness of 28kmpl.
The GTS300 will be sold through Piaggio Group’s Motoplex showroom. The premium Vespa has no competition and will not be sold in large numbers as it does not fall in the mass market segment.
India is one of the biggest scooter markets in the world but it mainly comprises of models below 125cc. However, the decent sales figures of performance-inclined scooters like the Aprilia SR150 go to show that the market is evolving and a scooter like the Vespa GTS 300 could work, if priced well.
